The Only Safe Kiss
Meet The Writer: Dani Feng
I was watching a lot of videos about the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic out of curiosity and interest due to recent events, so that’s why I felt more motivated towards this idea. This is something a lot of people are currently living through. Many
things from the Spanish flu apply today. Even after over a century, some things are still the same. I imagine the first verse would be sung in a genre similar to that of “The End of the World” by Skeeter Davis (old jazz), while the second verse (which includes more modern instrumental) would be similar to 80s Japanese City Pop songs like the ones sung by Mariya Takeuchi.
LYRICS
I’ve been staying home all day,
to avoid the pain, in this October haze.

My city is down with flu
and people around are turning blue
And though the war is ending,
the graveyard’s still extending.

They use wagons with horses
to carry the corpses
and people are digging their graves.

As time will go on
I'm not sure if I'm strong
But for you, I will stay brave.

Inside, Everyday,
every day just feels the same
but if I know you’re ok
it’ll go away.

Everyone here feels the same wide fear
don’t know how long til it’s clear

And though, my dear, you are missed
for now... the only safe kiss
are the x’s on the bottom of my letters
and for now that’s all I can say.

I’ve been staying home all day,
to stay safe, from this April rain.

Back in march, when I held you.
I thought I would hold you again.

The economy's bust,
I’m out of my job,
ran out of supplies,
I'm bored inside.
I try to escape to my video game
but every news headline is the same!
AT LEAST I can see your face on my screen
I don't know how long it will last.
But as long as I know that you’re fine,
then I’m ok just spending my time.
Inside, Everyday,
every day just feels the same
but if I know you’re ok
it’ll go away.
Everyone here feels the same wide fear
don’t know how long til it’s clear
And though, my dear, you are missed
for now... the only safe kiss
are the x’s on the bottom of my letters
and for now that’s all I can say.
Nevertheless...
I wish you the best.
we're miles apart and that’s fine.
If I know you're ok
I know that someday,
This will be …
over…
(cough cough) ah fuck
